Carlos Ezequiel

Drummer and composer Carlos Ezequiel has been working with Brazilian music and Jazz since 1992.  Originally from the state of Alagoas, in the northeast of Brazil, Carlos performed with a variety of local artists in the early 1990’s, including the I Maceió International Jazz Festival in ‘95. In the following year he won a scholarship to study at Berklee College of Music, in Boston, where he achieved his Bachelor’s degree in 1999.

 

Since ‘97, Carlos maintains a partnership with Brazilian guitarist Lupa Santiago.  Their first Cd, “Images”, recorded in Boston in early 2000, was nominated for the Latin Grammy 2002 as “Best Latin Jazz Album”.  In the same year they founded the group Sinequanon, releasing three more albums: “Sinequanon” (2004), “Telescópio” (2006) and “Horizonte Artificial” (2008).

 

As a performer, Carlos has played in the United States, Europe, Argentina, Peru, and all over Brazil.  He participated in festivals such as the Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland), Schelde Jazz Festival (Holland), Festival de Jazz de La Plata (Argentina), Cascavel Jazz Festival (Brazil), Best of Berklee 2000 (United States), among others.  While living in the U.S.A., he worked with various East Coast musicians, including Jaleel Shaw and Fernando Brandão.

 

In March of 2001, Carlos was nominated for the Visa Music Award in Brazil as Best Instrumentalist.  As a sideman he has performed with American artists Kurt Rosenwinkel, Howard Levy and David Liebman, with Danish musicians Thomas Walbum and Jens Viggo Fjord, and with Brazilian artists Sizão Machado, Nelson Faria, Rogério Souza, Daniel D’Alcântara, and Jurandir Santana.

 

As a producer, Carlos works for the Cultural Institute of Denmark, producing tours by Danish jazz artists in Brazil. He also works for Souza Lima Press (Brazil) and Advance Music (Germany), producing their music method books such as “Modern Improvisation” (L. Santiago), “Brazilian Bass Lines” (S. Machado) and “Samba-Jazz Play-Along” (G. Ribeiro and D. D’Alcântara).

 

Carlos is a faculty member at Souza Lima Music College in São Paulo, and has presented workshops at Federal University of Minas Gerais (Brazil), Festival de Musica de Itajai (Brazil), Festival de Jazz de La Plata (La Plata, Argentina), Escuela de Musica Contemporanea (Buenos Aires, Argentina), MasterMusic School (Lima, Peru) and Joinville Fine Arts Conservatory (Brazil). He is the author of “Melodic Interpretation for the Drumset” (Souza Lima Press / Advance Music, 2009).
